Anthony O Leary Kelly

SAVANNAH - Anthony O’Leary Kelly, 94, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2016, under the care of Hospice Savannah.

He was born September 7, 1921, in Savannah, Georgia and was the son of the late John Herbert Kelly and Josephine O’Leary Kelly. Tony attended Commercial High School and went on to work at the Central Georgia Railroad. He served in the United States Marine Corps Second Battalion E Company 1st Marines Division from January 1942 until July 1944. During the war, he was a private first class stationed in the Southwest Pacific and was a part of the first unit to land on the beaches of Guadalcanal. After being honorably discharged from his service, Tony returned to Savannah and the Central Georgia Railroad where he met the love of his life and wife of 67 years, Catharine Fitzpatrick Kelly. He later began his career at the Georgia Ports Authority from where he eventually retired. Tony was a dedicated husband, a devout Catholic and a proud veteran. He and Catharine traveled around the United States to attend numerous 1st Marine Division reunions and were always ready for an adventure.

Surviving are his sister, Lillis K. Fleming, his nieces, Ann Lutz (Richard), Cissy Fox, Mary Hagan (Walter) and many great nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, February1, 2016 with a Rosary service at 6:00 p.m. at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Nephews.

The family suggests any remembrances be made in his memory to the 1st Marine Division Association, a veteran’s organization that ensures that the 1st Marine Division continues to be a premier outfit that continues to honor their fallen brothers, and maintain that legacy of the 1st Marine Division for generations to come. 1st Marine Division Association, 1902 Wright Place, Suite 200, Carlsbad, CA 92008
